Glade

Dance Collective

703-943-9308

We are dancemakers, story tellers, and thinkers, seeking to raise the profile of modern dance in D.C. Through collaboration and performance, we challenge our bodies and minds to create meaningful art that evokes emotion and makes audiences think. We value a collective process that draws together people from diverse artistic backgrounds. We are Glade Dance Collective.

What do we do?

Glade makes intelligent dance about things that matter.

Who are we?

Glade was founded by Sylvana Christopher and Betsy Loikow. Read more about Glade's current membership.

artistic process

As a collective, Glade is no ordinary dance company. The dancers are not bodies to merely be moved around space. Each of our pieces - even if led by one principal choreographer - takes a collective approach to choreography, music, motivation, stage setting and/or costumes.

To make collective decisions, sometimes we rely heavily on improvisation, journaling and long rehearsals where almost as much time can be dedicated to discussion as dancing.

Glade's base dance technique is modern, but our choreography also draws heavily from folk, hip hop and jazz styles of dance.

Glade members frequently gather to take a collective class led by one of the members. We rotate teachers to allow our dancers to also hone their teaching skills.

How do we live our mission?

Glade has several programs to raise the profile of modern dance in D.C.
