The Wall --The Wall is an emotional work that explores the effect of enforced policies of separation on people’s lives, focusing on the experience of those living with the separation wall in the West Bank. When a wall goes up, who is walled in, and who is walled out? Led by Betsy Loikow, Glade dancers have explored this topic over the past year through music, poetry, film and narrative accounts of life in the shadow of the wall and its checkpoints. Glade has worked with local Palestinian dabkeh dancer and choreographer Rania Kiblawi to find movement for the piece and taken special inspiration from the writings of palestinian women in Nahalin, a village in the West Bank. Read a review of a past performance of The Wall.
Entwine -- Developed for the 2011 Dance is the Answer festival, Entwine is new collaborative piece for Glade Dance Collective that was performed on April 30. Developed specifically for the Labyrinth at Georgetown Waterfront Park, an open public space that incorporates this ancient design, Entwine asks, What happens if you cross the line? In a collaboration between dancers, visual artists and musicians. Glade dancers and visual artist partners explored labyrinths and the reasons we are drawn to them to create a multidisciplinary performance at the Georgetwon Waterfront labyrinth. Visual artists of all disciplines attended and participated in the performance to create new art inspired by dance. (See more pictures from Entwine)
Sitar Arts Center Performance Showcase -- Glade showed a broad collection of its repertoire in early March, including several new works, at this community arts center in Adams Morgan. The show is a part of Sitar's ongoing performance series that showcases new and emerging artists in the local community. The program included Tchaora, a work in progress, Superfast Jellyfish, District. Defined?, and new solos by several Glade members. With an audience full of aspiring musicians, dancers and artists, the interactive performance was fun for everyone involved!
DC Environmental Film Festival Launch Party -- In collaboration with the Pink Line Project, Glade Dance Collective was a part of the event launching the 19th Annual DC Environmental Film Festival. The event included wealth of live performances and entertainment, including Glade's debut of a contemporary improv piece.
District. Defined? -- Glade performed this innovative new work for the 2010 Eureka Dance Festival last December. Combining media, voice and dance, this piece examined the ways that music and dance are a part of the breath and life of our nation's Capitol. These art forms can connect and divide us, but they are an ever-present, and often-forgotten, part of life in every corner of this city. What song, rhythem, or dance epitomizes DC for you?
Dance is the Answer 2010 -- Glade enjoyed taking part in the two-week-long dance festival. We performed two exciting site-specific works for the program:
Arts & the Economy: Commemorating the WPA: Performed at the FDR Memorial, this work explored Arts and the Economy, commemorating the 75th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration. See more images of our performance
Health/Care: Glade put on a re-worked version of Health/Care at the Upper Senate Park on Capitol Hill. With the Capitol dome as our backdrop, this collective work examined our need to care for one another and for ourselves, especially at a time when traditional notions of “healthcare” in our country face unprecedented challenges and change.
Tcahora will be performed at Joy of Motions's Dance Project.
When: Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 at 8:00pm
